(3/31/06) EPA is finalizing revisions to its Motor Vehicle Inspection and Maintenance (I/M) rule. Vehicle I/M programs are important in meeting air quality goals because they identify and provide incentives for repairing vehicles with malfunctioning emission control systems. The changes will help to ensure that areas required to adopt new I/M programs will be able to meet their Clean Air Act goals in a timely manner. The revisions will update timing-related references in the I/M rule such as submission dates, start dates, evaluation dates and other milestones or deadlines. This rulemaking will only affect areas that are required to implement I/M programs for the first time as a result of being designated and classified as non-attainment under the 8-hour ozone standard.
