EPA SETS AGENDA FOR SECOND MEETING OF
FOOD SAFETY ADVISORY COMMITTEE
EPA has set an agenda for the second meeting of the Food Safety Advisory Committee which will meet in Washington on Oct. 22-23. The committee, recently formed as a subcommittee under the auspices of EPA's Advisory Council for Environmental Policy and Technology, was established to assist the Agency with the implementation of the Food Quality Protection Act (FQPA), signed into law on Aug. 3. The new law amends both the Federal Food, Drug and Cosmetic Act and the Federal Insecticide, Fungicide and Rodenticide Act to provide a protective regulatory scheme for pesticides. The two-day meeting, which is open to the public, will be held in the Washington Marriott, l221 22nd St. N.W., 9 a.m. - 5 p.m. on Oct. 22, and 9 a.m. - 3 p.m. on Oct. 23. Among the agenda items are the following: consideration of pesticide benefits under FQPA; reduced risk, IPM (Integrated Pest Management) and Pollution Prevention; minor use pesticide issues; communication and right-to-know requirements; and human health risk issues associated with exposure from various pesticide products that have a common mode of action, as well as aggregate exposure to pesticides (e.g., dietary, drinking water, swimming pools, residential aggregate exposure including dietary, drinking water, in the home, lawns, gardens and recreational areas). Chaired by Fred Hansen, EPA Deputy Administrator and Co-chaired by Lynn Goldman, Assistant Administrator for Prevention, Pesticides and Toxic Substances, the Food Safety Advisory Committee is made up of approximately 40 representatives from the general public, environmental and public interest groups, the public health community, the chemical industry, agriculture and other pesticide user groups, food processors, federal and state governments, academia and others. A third meeting is now planned for Nov. 14-15. The first meeting of the committee was held on Sept. 26. Margie Fehrenbach of EPA's Office of Pesticide Programs is the Committee's designated federal officer (703-308-4775).
