NEWARK - The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency has awarded a $4,483 grant to the Delaware Academy of Science and the Iron Hill Museum to help transform more than eight acres of an abandoned pit mine into a teaching facility that schools and community groups can use for environmental programming.
The project will include setting up a half-mile trail with six “exploration stations” that each focus on specific environmental issues related to mining, weather or water quality. Teacher workshops will be arranged at the facility so that teachers can learn how to use the trail as a teaching resource.
“The concept of transforming land unsuitable for construction into an outdoor learning center is an ideal way to educate children and the general public about environmental issues in their communities, ” said Bradley Campbell, regional administrator for EPA’s mid-Atlantic region.
EPA’s education grant program is designed to stimulate grass-roots environmental education. Nationally, EPA awarded more than $2.3 million in environmental education grants in 2000 to schools, civic groups and non-profit organizations.
