FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
(Kansas City, Kan., Jan. 16, 2009) - EPA has released its final decision on Missouri's 2004/2006 list of impaired waters. This decision will help the Missouri Department of Natural Resources (MDNR) set priorities for restoration activities to improve water quality in the coming years.
EPA Region 7 Administrator John B. Askew said, "The impaired waters identified on Missouri's list will help to reduce sources of water pollution in the state. EPA encourages MDNR to continue its diligent work in assessing the water quality of Missouri's lakes and streams."
MDNR submitted its impaired waters list to EPA for review and approval, as required by the Clean Water Act. The Clean Water Act requires EPA to review the state's list of impaired waters to determine if the state reasonably considered available water quality-related data, and identified waters to be listed.
EPA's action finalizes the previous decisions on Missouri's list, which included the approval of Missouri's decision to list 99 waters and the delisting of 183 waters. Today's action also finalizes EPA's decision by adding or restoring 129 waters and approving the delisting of four waters.
EPA considered and incorporated a number of comments from local citizens and representatives of organizations in the final decision. The public is a key EPA ally in reaching the Clean Water Act's goal, which is to restore the integrity of the nation's waters.
EPA's Jan. 16, 2009, decision letter provides a more detailed description of EPA's review and the basis for this action. The decision letter, including the consolidated 2004/2006 impaired waters list, is available at https://www.epa.gov/region07/news_events/legal.
