FOR RELEASE: FRIDAY, JUNE 5, 1998
BFI TO PAY $1.5 MILLION PENALTY FOR MISHANDLING MEDICAL WASTES

On June 1, Browning-Ferris Inc., pleaded guilty in U.S. District Court in Washington, D.C., to violating the Clean Water Act by discharging contaminated wastewater into municipal sewers from its medical waste management facility in Washington D.C. Under a plea agreement, BFI agreed to pay $1.5 million in penalties and further agreed to enact a nationwide program to ensure that its medical waste facilities comply with environmental laws. The discharges occurred on three occasions between Jan. 27, 1995 and March 24, 1995, when BFI employees illegally allowed a combination of rainwater and wastewater to flow into city sewers. The case was investigated by EPA’s Criminal Investigation Division and the FBI with the assistance of EPA’s National Enforcement Investigations Center.
