WASTE HAULER COMPANY AND ITS OWNER CONVICTED OF RCRA CRIME
On May 27, in U.S. District Court in the western district of Washington, in Seattle, Waste Disposal Inc. and its owner, John Pike Sr., pleaded guilty to illegally storing 80,000 gallons of hazardous waste at an unpermitted facility in violation of the Resource Conservation and Recovery Act. For several years, Waste Disposal Inc., operated as a hazardous waste transport and disposal service in western Washington, accepted hazardous waste that had not been properly designated or handled. In November 1993, John Pike, Sr. began leasing two 20,000-gallon storage tanks from the Port of Grays Harbor in Aberdeen, Wash. Waste Disposal employees also added and stored hazardous waste in a nearby 300,000 gallon tank that they had not leased. By May 1995, Waste Disposal had accumulated over 80,000 gallons of hazardous waste in an unleased 300,000 gallon tank. Samples from the tank revealed waste water contaminated with solvent and benzene. Pike was evicted from the site and has been sued by the Port of Grays Harbor for cleanup costs. This case was investigated by EPA's Criminal Investigation Division.
