EPA Grant Supports Water Study at J.S. Jenks School

PHILADELPHIA, Pa. -- The School District of Philadelphia has been awarded a $4,280 environmental education grant from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency to establish a water program at the J.S. Jenks School.

More than 600 students in grades K-8, their parents and members of the community will participate in a two-part study of water and the Delaware estuary focusing on both environmental science and art.

The project will include field trips to the Schuylkill Center for Environmental Education, the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts, Fairmount Waterworks, Audubon’s Mill Grove home in Montgomery County, and the Wagner Free Institute. The goal of the program is to help children learn how they relate to the water historically, geographically, environmentally, and culturally and ecologically.

"Through programs like this, children are encouraged to be more responsible about water in the ecosystem and to develop a heightened sensitivity to water issues in our region," said W. Michael McCabe, EPA’s regional administrator for the mid-Atlantic region.

EPA’s education grant program is designed to simulate grass-roots environmental education. In the mid-Atlantic region, 25 grant recipients include schools, civic groups and non-profit organizations. Nationally, $3 million was awarded in 1999.
