San Jose Company Cited for Hazardous Waste Violations
SAN FRANCISCO B The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency last week fined Haro = s Metal Finishing, Inc. of San Jose $7,150 for alleged hazardous waste management violations discovered during a routine inspection last year.
An EPA inspection conducted on March 21, 2001 revealed Haro = s was improperly labeling and storing hazardous waste in open containers. The EPA investigators found six unsealed drums of zinc plating sludge and one open container of nickel plating sludge.
"Companies that have hazardous chemicals must comply with the law, label containers properly to ensure worker safety, and seal drums to prevent spills to the environment," said Jeff Scott, the EPA = s Pacific Southwest director for waste management programs. "The metal finishing industry should be on alert that the EPA considers these violations serious and will take necessary enforcement actions."
The facility was charged with violating the Resource Conservation and Recovery Act which regulates the permitting, handling and storage of hazardous wastes. The facility has taken corrective actions to address the citations.
Haro = s Metal Finishing, Inc. specializes in zinc plating operations but also plates in nickel, gold, and tin. It has been in business at least 22 years.
