EPA To Hold Open House to Discuss Ordnance Products Superfund Site

NORTH EAST, Md -- The Environmental Protection Agency is inviting local residents and community members to discuss EPA’s upcoming investigation of the Ordnance Products Superfund site. EPA’s technical and community relations staff will welcome members of the community on Tuesday, July 20, 1999, from 6-9 p.m. at the Cecil County Library, North East Branch, 106 West Cecil Avenue, North East, MD.

Representatives from EPA and the Maryland Department of the Environment (MDE) will be available to answer questions regarding the plans and project schedule of the investigation. During the investigation, EPA will sample the soil, groundwater, and surface water to determine the nature and extent of contamination at the site.

The 95-acre Ordnance Products Inc. Superfund site is a former military manufacturing facility that operated from the late 1950s to the mid-1970s. Although explosives were never manufactured on site, components such as detonators and fuses were. During the manufacturing activities, waste materials were deposited above ground or buried in pits and trenches throughout the site. EPA placed the site on the National Priorities List (NPL) in September 1997. The NPL is EPA’s list of the nation’s most serious uncontrolled or abandoned hazardous waste sites.
