FOR RELEASE: FRIDAY, JANUARY 8, 1999
EPA SEEKS APPLICANTS FOR JOB TRAINING AND DEVELOPMENT DEMONSTRATION PILOTS

EPA expects to award approximately ten Brownfields Job Training and Development Demonstration Pilots that total $2 million by June 1999. EPA is seeking applicants for these pilot grants that will each be funded up to $200,000 over two years. These funds are used to bring together community groups, job training organizations, educators, investors, lenders, developers and other affected parties to address the issue of providing training to residents in communities impacted by brownfields. These efforts help to guarantee that communities have the trained workforce needed to revitalize contaminated properties, and that local community members have an opportunity to compete for jobs. The pilot projects must prepare trainees in activities that can be usefully applied to a cleanup employing an alternative or innovative technology. Pilot applicants also must be located within or near one of the brownfields assessment pilot communities. Colleges, universities, nonprofit training centers exempt from taxation, community job training organizations, states, cities, towns, counties, U.S. Territories, and federally recognized Indian Tribes are eligible. The deadline for proposals is March 1, 1999. Proposals Guidelines are available electronically on EPA’s website at: www.epa.gov/swerosps/job.htm or by calling 202-260-4527.
