EPA Awards $5,000 Education Grant to Children’s Treehouse Daycare Facility

SHEPHERDSTOWN, W. Va. -- The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency has awarded a $5,000 grant to the Children’s Treehouse daycare facility here to establish an outdoor learning center to teach pre-school and elementary students about the environment.

The Children’s Treehouse in Jefferson County is a non-profit, non-federally funded center located on the National Conservation Training Center property. The site will be equipped with a water center and growing site with plants, shrubs and trees that will attract insects, butterflies and birds.

“This type of project can open many opportunities for young children to learn about their surrounding environment and about the importance of preserving wildlife and natural habitats,” said Bradley Campbell, regional administrator for EPA’s mid-Atlantic region.

EPA’s education grant program is designed to stimulate grass-roots environmental education. Nationally, EPA awarded more than $2.3 million in environmental education grants in 2000 to schools, civic groups and non-profit organizations.
