FORMER CALIFORNIA MANAGER SENTENCED FOR WATER VIOLATION
Larry Bietz of Ceres, Calif., the former plant manager for the Modesto Tallow Company (MTC), was sentenced on Sept. 20, to one year in prison and a $3,000 fine by the U.S. District Court in Fresno for violating the Clean Water Act by falsifying wastewater monitoring results. MTC processes animal carcases into tallow, grease, meat, bone and poultry by-products. MTC generates tens of thousands of gallons of wastewater each day which must be treated on site before being discharged into the city sewer system. The law requires MTC to monitor the wastewater it discharges. Failing to properly monitor and report discharges can lead to high levels of contaminants in sewage which can damage treatment facilities and interfere with the proper processing and decontamination of sewage. The case was investigated by EPA’s Criminal Investigation Division with the assistance of EPA’s National Enforcement Investigations Center, the U.S. Department of Transportation, the FBI, the city of Modesto, and was prosecuted by the U.S. Department of Justice.
