Federal, state and local officials will join local business leaders and citizens to commemorate the cleanup of the former Double Eagle Superfund site in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma.
The Double Eagle Refinery, located at 1900 NE First Street, collected, stored, and re-refined used oil, and stored and distributed the final product. The refinery operated from about 1929 to the mid-1980s.
Sludges from the re-refining operation were disposed onsite in lagoons. Analysis of samples taken at the site found elevated levels of organic contaminants and heavy metals in sludges onsite and drainage areas leading offsite. Primary contaminants were lead, xylene, ethylbenzene and trichloroethane.
To remove the threat of contamination to surrounding areas, more than 43,000 cubic yards of contaminated sludge, soil and sediment were treated and disposed offsite in a landfill permitted to receive non-hazardous wastes. This was replaced with clean fill dirt and graded to control rainwater runoff.
Continuing ground water monitoring will ensure that the public health is protected.
