City leaders and elected officials will join the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) for an event celebrating the removal of waste from the former Dallas Plating site. EPA will continue monitoring the site if conditions change.
The work at this abandoned industrial property was funded by the federal Superfund program. Established by the Comprehensive Environmental Response Compensation, and Liability Act of 1980, Superfund is our country's program for cleaning uncontrolled hazardous waste sites.
Large quantities of hazardous materials including heavy metals had been abandoned in buildings on the property. As these buildings deteriorated, these hazardous materials were exposed to the elements. EPA and the City of Dallas were concerned that rain and wind would dilute and carry hazardous materials onto surrounding property posing a threat to residents' health.
WHEN: 2 p.m., Thursday, Sept. 10, 1998
