The United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) is now accepting applications for Environmental Education Grants to be awarded in spring 1998, Regional Administrator Jerry Clifford announced in Dallas today.
"Almost $200,000 in Environmental Education grants are being awarded this year in the five states comprising Region 6," Mr. Clifford said.
Most grants are awarded for $5,000 or less. Grants more than $25,000 are awarded by EPA's headquarters office.
Educational institutions, state and tribal environmental or educational agencies, and nonprofit organizations, including public broadcasting agencies, are eligible to apply. Applications must be postmarked no later than Nov. 15, 1997. Region 6 is particularly seeking projects with direct student involvement and those dealing with children's environmental health issues.
President Clinton has made children's health issues a priority of his administration. In February, EPA Administrator Carol Browner appointed Dr. Philip Landrigan to head the newly created Office of Children's Health Protection. In keeping with this emphasis, Region 6 is seeking opportunities to educate people about these issues and steps they can take to improve children's environmental health.
Complete information on applying for an Environmental Education grant is available on the internet at http://eelink.umich.edu or http://www.nceet.snre.umich.edu/grant.html. Applications and instructions also may be obtained by calling EPA Region 6 at (214)665-2200 or (800)887-6063.
"Educating everyone, and particularly our young people, is vital to creating and preserving a healthy environment for ourselves and future generations," Mr. Clifford said.
