EPA awards grant to alleviate sewage woes in Paint Borough, Pa.

PHILADELPHIA – The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency has awarded a $120,500 grant to Paint Borough, Somerset County, Pa. to help pay for sewer upgrades that will relieve periodic basement flooding in parts of the borough.

“The proposed project will improve the quality of life as well as the health and safety in the service area by helping to eliminate basement flooding and the raw sewage discharges to Paint Creek,” said Donald S. Welsh, regional administrator for EPA’s mid-Atlantic region.

The EPA grant will provide partial funding of the sanitary sewer replacement project servicing the area bounded by Hoffman Avenue, Pine Street, Elm Street and Cherry Street. Originally constructed in the 1930's, the borough’s sewage system was not designed to handle growth in the community, and was causing problems with basement flooding in some homes.

The EPA grant will pay for 55 percent of the project’s $219,091 eligible costs. The balance is being financed with state funds.
