BROWNER RECEIVES AMERICAN LUNG ASSOCIATION TOP HONOR
The prestigious President's Award of the American Lung Association (ALA) was presented to EPA Administrator Carol M. Browner on Feb. 11 for her leadership in "the toughest action in a generation to safeguard public health from the threats posed by air pollution." The presentation was made by ALA President Ernest P. Franck who saluted Browner's leadership in tightening national air quality standards for ozone and particulate matter and for reducing exposure to environmental tobacco smoke. He also cited her efforts on behalf of children, particularly the focus on the need to address asthma and environmental triggers. Browner accepted the award on behalf of EPA employees because "they are the ones who carry out our mission every single day." Calling for even greater efforts on behalf of children, Browner cited Administration efforts to date including the President's Executive Order on reducing the environmental health and safety risks specific to children, the EPA-funded research studies of children's environmental health hazards underway at eight universities and asthma education programs funded by the Administration, such as the ALA Open Airways for Schools program. Further information on children's programs is available at https://www.epa.gov/children. Further information on the research centers is available at http://es.epa.gov/ncerqa/grants/child98.html.
