FOR RELEASE: FRIDAY, DECEMBER 4, 1998

EPA’s SCIENCE ADVISORY BOARD AND SCIENTIFIC ADVISORY PANEL TO MEET DEC. 10-11

A joint subcommittee of the EPA Science Advisory Board (SAB) and FIFRA Scientific Advisory Panel (SAP) will hold an open meeting to discuss use of health and environmental research involving human subjects on Dec. 10-11. The meeting will be at the Sheraton Crystal City Hotel, 1800 Jefferson Davis Highway, Arlington, Va. 22202 (telephone 703-486-1111). Sessions will run from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. on both days. EPA asked the SAB and SAP to form a joint subcommittee to advise the Agency on a range of scientific and ethical issues relating to the appropriate use of research involving human subjects. Strict standards for protecting human subjects already apply to any research performed or supported by the federal government. The Agency is particularly interested in exploring the issues raised when private companies choose to test pesticides in humans, and submit the results of such research to EPA. Because EPA neither encourages nor requires research on pesticide effects in humans, it has not set standards for such studies. A central issue is how the Agency should assess the scientific and ethical acceptability of these studies when they are submitted for its consideration. Guidance from the SAB/SAP subcommittee will assist the Agency to clarify its policies and procedures for considering research involving human subjects. EPA will not consider human research that fails to meet the highest ethical standards. The Agency’s charge to the SAB/SAP subcommittee and related background materials are available on the Internet at: https://www.epa.gov/science1/ or can be obtained by contacting the Office of Pesticides Docket at 703-305-5805.
