LOUISIANA FIRM PLEADS GUILTY TO POLLUTING MISSISSIPPI RIVER
Midstream Holding Corp. of Baton Rouge, La., pleaded guilty on May 12, in U.S. District Court for the Middle District in Baton Rouge, La., to one count of violating the federal Clean Water Act by illegally discharging waste oil and bilge slop into the Mississippi River. The discharges occurred from approximately 1992 through 1995 at the Midstream Fuel Service Inc. facility in Baton Rouge, which was engaged in the business of providing fueling and waste disposal services to vessels on the Mississippi River. Midstream Fuel Service is a subsidiary of Midstream Holding Corp. which faces a maximum fine of up to $50,000 per day of violation. The case was investigated by EPA's Criminal Investigation Division with the support of EPA's National Enforcement Investigations Center, the U.S. Customs Service, U.S. Coast Guard Investigative Services, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, the Louisiana State Police, the Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries and the Louisiana Department of Environmental Quality.
