MILLSBORO, Del. - The U. S. Environmental Protection Agency has selected the Town of Millsboro Wastewater Treatment plant for EPA’s annual operations and maintenance excellence award.
The award will be presented at Millsboro treatment plant at 1 p.m. tomorrow on Thursday, September 9. For further information or directions, please contact Millsboro Township Manager Fay Lingo at (302) 934-8171.
The award is presented annually to recognize the best wastewater treatment facilities in Pennsylvania, Delaware, Maryland, Virginia, West Virginia and the District of Columbia, which encompasses more than 3,700 municipal wastewater treatment plants thoughout the mid-Atlantic region.
The Millsboro plant is being honored because it has demonstrated the most improved performance. The facility participated in EPA’s Operator Outreach Program, which provides free technical assistance to communities with troubled wastewater treatment plants. This program is administrated by the Delaware Technical and Community College, in Georgetown, Delaware.
"Over the past 25 years, we have seen significant improvements in our nation’s water quality. Much of this improvement can be attributed to better wastewater treatment facilities. This award publicly recognizes the outstanding job that Millsboro is doing to protect our rivers and streams," said W. Michael McCabe, EPA mid-Atlantic regional administrator.
The EPA reviews mountains of data to determine the winners of this prestigious award and competition is tough. Award recipients are selected for their performance in complying with wastewater discharge permits, maintenance management, laboratory practices, personnel training and public awareness needs.
The operations and maintenance award honors the staff who are involved in the day-to-day operations of the facility. This award also recognizes local officials for their commitment to protecting their community’s environmental infrastructure.
