BOSTON – The Environmental Protection Agency’s New England Office will be holding two public information sessions in October about a new round of Brownfields grants being made available to help communities and states across the country clean up and restore contaminated parcels.

EPA is accepting proposals for Brownfields site assessment, revolving loan fund and cleanup grants. Proposals are due to EPA by Nov. 12, 2004. The grants are being funded through the Small Business Liability Relief and Brownfields Revitalization Act passed by Congress in 2002. EPA estimates that $100 million will be available to make up to 200 grant awards, contingent upon the availability of funds in fiscal year 2005.

Information sessions will be held from 8 a.m. to noon Oct. 4 at the Radisson Hotel in Manchester, NH and Oct. 7 at the Holiday Inn in Worcester, MA. The workshops will include an overview on newly-revised grant guidelines for the assessment, cleanup and revolving loan fund programs.

Pre-registration for the information sessions is required. To sign up, get directions and learn more about EPA’s Brownfields programs, visit the agency’s web site at www.epa.gov/ne/brownfields/whatsnew.htm#session.

Since 1995, EPA has provided more than $91 million for grants, site evaluations, job training and cleanup loan programs to dozens of communities and agencies across New England, including $8.6 million earlier this year. EPA estimates that every acre of reclaimed Brownfields saves 4.5 acres of greenspace and every greenspace created, on average, has doubled the value of surrounding properties.
