U.S. EPA CITES FOUR FACILITIES IN ARIZONA FOR TANK VIOLATIONS

  (San Francisco)--  The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (U.S. EPA) today announced that it has cited four facilities in the Flagstaff area and fined them a total of $2,150 for violations of federal underground fuel storage tank regulations.

     The four facilities had numerous violations. These included: inadequate inventory control, failure to conduct manual tank gauging, and failure to report and confirm suspected releases.

     The citations were issued immediately after inspections by U.S. EPA in August 1996, and the firms have failed to correct the violations. The facilities cited were: Circle K #840, 5400 N. Highway 89; Interstate Mobil, 2484 E. Butler Ave.; Carter Cardlock, 2201 E. Huntington, all located in Flagstaff; and, Blue Hills Market #418, 210 S. Highway 69, Dewey. Sure-Stop Shell, 2018 Butler Ave., Flagstaff, was also cited but has since corrected its violations.
 
     The facilities that have not complied must comply with U.S. EPA's underground storage tank regulations or face more formal enforcement action, which carries much stiffer penalties.
     
     The U.S. EPA's underground storage tank (UST) field citation program is designed to quickly bring owners and operators of underground fuel tanks into compliance with federal UST regulations.  Facilities that receive a citation are required to comply with the regulations and pay any penalty within 30 days. The citations impose penalties which generally range from $50 to $300 per violation.
