EPA HOSTS INTERNATIONAL HAZARDOUS MATERIALS SPILLS CONFERENCE
EPA, in conjunction with the National Response Team, the Great Lakes Commission, The Spills Control Association, the National Governors Association and the Chemical Manufacturers Association will host the 14th International Hazardous Materials Spills Conference, April 5-9, in Chicago, Ill. at the Palmer Hilton Hotel. The biannual conference, whose theme this year is “Risk Management: Closing the Loop,” offers extensive skills-training and career development opportunities for people in all facets of the public safety, contingency planning and emergency response professions. Some of the topics to be covered include: risk management planning for state and local emergency response commissions; OSHA 8-hour awareness training; managing abandoned vessels and barges; coordinating operations during a terrorist event; response in harsh weather conditions; and hands-on training on current software applications. Special events include a hazardous substance response exercise, a tour of the Chicago Fire Academy and a tour of the new 911 Center in Chicago.
