EPA, NIST SEEK APPLICANTS TO DEVELOP A NATIONAL RESOURCE
CENTER FOR THE METAL FINISHING INDUSTRY
As part of EPA's Common Sense Initiative EPA and the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) have announced the opportunity for not for profit organizations to enter into a cooperative agreement with the federal government to develop a National Metal Finishing Resource Center. The center will be the first of its kind to provide multi-media "one-stop shopping" compliance information tailored to a specific industry. The center will provide businesses and technical assistance providers with current pollution prevention technology developments and offer assistance to businesses trying to meet government environmental requirements. The center meets the goals of the President's Environmental Technology Initiative and EPA Administrator Carol Browner's Common Sense Initiative by combining environmental protection with economic development. The center will provide metal finishers with information about pollution prevention technologies that achieve manufacturing efficiency and enhanced competitiveness while reducing any environmental impacts. The center also will furnish customers with compliance tools and information to achieve continued environmental improvements to meet or exceed existing environmental requirements. EPA will encourage potential award recipients to create partnerships among themselves to provide a complete and comprehensive assistance center. For more information, contact Greg Waldrip of EPA's Office of Compliance at 202-564-7024 or David Gold, NIST, at 301-975-5049.
