EPA grants support Maryland environmental education

PHILADELPHIA - The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency has awarded two grants to the Maryland Association of Environmental & Outdoor Education of Chevy Chase, Md. to study the benefits of environmental education and to start up an environmental education fellowship program.

“By maintaining a prominent environmental education program in our schools, we can help ensure that our future leaders will have the knowledge and experience to make sound environmental decisions that protect our natural resources,” said Donald S. Welsh, EPA’s mid-Atlantic regional administrator.

One grant for $4,560 will be used to conduct a study on the relationship between environmental education and achievement by analyzing the impact of Maryland’s Green Schools program, which encourages schools to include environmental education in their curriculum.

The second grant for $4,950 will initiate an environmental education fellowship program to cultivate the interests of teachers in largely minority classrooms. The program will provide training for teachers on basic environmental education concepts and ideas on how they can get students involved in environmental education.

Since 1992, EPA has provided nearly $3 million annually to local organizations and schools nationwide. These grants fund education programs in nonprofit organizations, educational institutions, and governmental agencies supporting a wide range of environmental issues for citizens of all ages.
