Cleanup Status
Note: The Virginia Department of Environmental Quality (VDEQ) is the lead agency for managing cleanups at this facility.
Under the Consent Order, EPA and CCL will continue to determine the nature and extent of the trichloroethylene (TCE) groundwater plume under the Facility. The groundwater pump and treat system, which had been operating for over a year, was shut down for 90 days for evaluation of groundwater and sub-slab vapors under the building. In CCL's Report of March 2015, the pump and treat was shown to have little or no impact on controlling the groundwater plume. CCL will submit a workplan in October to address the need for a better understanding of groundwater movement on site as well feasibility of a vacuum extraction system under the building.
On September 18, 2023, EPA determined the Corrective Action Environmental Indicator for the Migration of Contaminated Groundwater was under Control. While in July 2015, EPA determined human exposures risk from contaminants were under control.

The INTRAPAC facility manufactures aluminum and tin tubes and inhaler cans for the pharmaceutical, health care, personal care, household and industrial markets. Manufacturing at the facility began in 1959.
Contaminants at this Facility
Volatile organic compounds (VOCs) are the primary contaminants of concern. Those found include: trichloroethylene (TCE) and its breakdown products.
