School IAQ Assessment Mobile App Frequently Asked Questions
Frequently Asked Questions
1. Are schools required to follow EPA's Indoor Air Quality (IAQ) Tools for Schools guidance?
Using guidance, such as the IAQ Tools for Schools Action Kit, is completely voluntary. EPA does not require the retention or submission of any IAQ assessment information gathered. However, some states have recently enacted legislation that requires schools to take specific IAQ actions.
EPA also does not require air monitoring in schools. However, your state or local jurisdiction may have implemented some type of monitoring requirements. Learn more about IAQ laws in your state by visiting the Environmental Law Institute's website. View their database of state indoor air quality laws in schools.
2. What special training do I need to use the School IAQ Assessment Mobile App?
The School IAQ Assessment Mobile App does not require specialized training to use. This app combines the foundational guidance from the IAQ Tools for Schools Action Kit with eleven checklists used to assess various areas of a school facility while conducting a walkthrough. Within the mobile app, users can review IAQ guidance from the Action Kit such as:
- IAQ Coordinators Guide;
- Framework for Effective School IAQ Management; and
- Protecting IAQ during School Energy Efficiency Retrofit Projects with Energy Savings Plus Health Guidelines.
3. How do I get started setting up the School IAQ Assessment Mobile App?
The School IAQ Assessment Mobile App can be downloaded from the App Store or Google Play. Once you initiate the app on your smart device, you can set up a designated email address for your IAQ coordinator (or another individual who will receive the submitted checklists). Each checklist has a series of questions linked to a specific area in the school. Additionally, users can submit notes at the end of each checklist and attach pictures to highlight areas where IAQ improvements may need to be addressed. Review the How to Get Started section in the app (located in the upper right corner of the app home screen) for more detailed instructions on how to use, submit, and organize the checklists as part of your school IAQ management program. You can also download simple instructions for managing your completed checklists.
