Selected Application Summary
The selected application will support the building of a networked geothermal system to provide clean heating and cooling to Union Station and the construction of a neighborhood-scale, mixed-income housing development adjacent to the station by Housing Authority of New Haven. The grant will eliminate the use of on-site fossil fuels from the proposed new properties and provide an electric capacity resource in the form of grid interactivity, demand management, and thermal energy storage. As a joint effort between the City of New Haven Office of Climate & Sustainability, New Haven Parking Authority, and Housing Authority of New Haven, this project will achieve durable greenhouse gas (GHG) emission reductions and provide an affordable source of clean heating and cooling to the surrounding mixed-income communities.
Key Things to Know
Based on information provided by the applicant, the selected project will deliver the following benefits to reduce GHGs and support communities 1:
- Decarbonize a historic rail station that serves nearly 625,000 rail passengers annually.
- Provide low-cost and renewable energy to 1,000 proposed new mixed-income housing units in the surrounding area.
- Create job and hands-on apprenticeship opportunities for individuals in underserved areas.
- Establish a blueprint for similar cities and communities to use thermal energy networks to support affordable housing production, economic development, and neighborhood-scale decarbonization.
Activities in the selected application reflect measures in Connecticut's Department of Energy and Environmental Protection’s Priority Climate Action Plan (pdf) (2.9 MB).
1 The emission reduction estimates, as well as the descriptions of measures and benefits, were summarized from information provided by the applicant. These estimates, along with the award amount, are subject to change.
EPA will award grants to selected applicants once they meet all legal and administrative requirements. As of July 2024, grants are expected to be awarded by the end of 2024.
