Selected Application Summary
The selected application will support the City of New Orleans in reducing greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions across multiple sectors by improving access to active transportation, adopting energy efficiency measures in city buildings, installing solar panels, and implementing urban forestry programs emphasizing native plants. The grant will fund projects primarily focused on improving the health and wellbeing of local low-income and disadvantaged communities.
Key Things to Know
Based on information provided by the applicant, the selected project will deliver the following benefits to reduce GHGs and support communities 1:
- Expand transportation access for disadvantaged communities while reducing transportation-related emissions and increasing active transportation via 148 new bike share stations, 2,500 new bikeshare e-bikes, and incentives for 3,000 new e-bikes for residents.
- Reduce energy costs and improve indoor air quality at approximately 50 municipal buildings receiving energy efficiency upgrades or solar photovoltaic installations.
- Plant 7,500 trees to reduce the heat island effect, increase green space, lower energy costs, and improve air quality in low-canopy areas of the city.
- Establish new programs to incentivize solar adoption on privately owned facilities.
- Create building-related programs that support the decarbonization of large buildings through building energy benchmarks and performance standards.
Activities in the selected application reflect measures in Southeastern Louisiana's Priority Climate Action Plan.
1 The emission reduction estimates, as well as the descriptions of measures and benefits, were summarized from information provided by the applicant. These estimates, along with the award amount, are subject to change.
EPA will award grants to selected applicants once they meet all legal and administrative requirements. As of July 2024, grants are expected to be awarded by the end of 2024.
