Selected Application Summary
The selected application will establish competitive grants for projects to reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions from coal mines and landfills across Virginia, that will particularly benefit residents of low-income and disadvantaged communities. In partnership with other state agencies, the selected application will fund a statewide competitive grant program for food rescue and composting programs at Commonwealth agencies, colleges, and university campuses.
Key Things to Know
Based on information provided by the applicant, the selected project will deliver the following benefits to reduce GHGs and support communities 1:
- Reduce methane emissions equivalent to over 3 million metric tons of carbon dioxide.
- Establish a program to capture and reuse methane from abandoned and active coal mines in the Southwestern areas of Virginia, many of which are located near low-income and disadvantaged communities.
- Update statewide policy recommendations for reduction and use of coal mine methane.
- Implement a statewide program to capture and convert methane emissions from landfills for beneficial uses, such as heat production, renewable gas, and electricity generation at nearby facilities.
- Launch 15-20 programs at agencies, colleges, and universities to rescue edible food prior to disposal to feed hungry people and divert wasted food to composting.
- Improve air quality in low-income and disadvantaged communities.
Activities in the selected application reflect measures in Virginia’s Priority Climate Action Plan (pdf) (17.6 MB).
1 The emission reduction estimates, as well as the descriptions of measures and benefits, were summarized from information provided by the applicant. These estimates, along with the award amount, are subject to change.
EPA will award grants to selected applicants once they meet all legal and administrative requirements. As of July 2024, grants are expected to be awarded by the end of 2024.
About EPA's Climate Pollution Reduction Grants (CPRG) Implementation Grants
Authorized under the Inflation Reduction Act, EPA’s CPRG program will provide nearly $5 billion in grants for states, local governments, Tribes, and territories to develop and implement ambitious plans to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and other harmful air pollution while benefitting low-income and disadvantaged communities.
