Selected Application Summary
The selected application will convert waste wood biomass into biochar that can be sold in various markets, including as a soil amendment for agricultural applications. By converting forest biomass into biochar, the selected application will reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, mitigate wildfire risks, improve soil quality, and create jobs. The project is designed to be flexible and capable of creating biochar from various types of wood material including tree limbs, green waste, tree trimmings, and sawmill dust. This project will provide a sustainable solution to environmental challenges faced by the Tule River Nation.
Key Things to Know
Based on information provided by the applicant, the selected project will deliver the following benefits to reduce GHGs and support communities 1:
- Process forest biomass from the Tribe's 57,000 acres of land, including cull logs; dead, dying, and diseased trees; and other sub-merchantable material.
- Convert as many as 90 tons of feedstock into 13.2 tons of dry biochar per day (or approximately 31,500 tons of feedstock into 4,623 tons of biochar per year).
- Generate carbon credits by sequestering carbon during biochar conversion and use electric power created from byproducts of the conversion process for the facility’s operations.
- Promote sustainable forestry management practices and improve soil health to enhance long-term ecological stability and agricultural productivity.
- Serve as a replicable model for other communities and industries, including those in hard-to-abate sectors where traditional GHG reduction strategies are less feasible or not yet widely implemented.
Activities and benefits summarized above reflect the measures in California Air Resource Board’s Priority Climate Action Plan (pdf) (2.0 MB).

EPA will award grants to selected applicants once they meet all legal and administrative requirements. As of August 2024, grants are expected to be awarded by the end of 2024.
About EPA's Climate Pollution Reduction Grants (CPRG) Implementation Grants
Authorized under the Inflation Reduction Act, EPA’s CPRG program will provide nearly $5 billion in grants for states, local governments, Tribes, and territories to develop and implement ambitious plans to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and other harmful air pollution while benefitting low-income and disadvantaged communities.
