Purpose

Pollution prevention (P2) has been a successful, non-regulatory approach to conserve energy and water, reduce the use of toxic materials, and save money. The purpose of this recognition awards program is to highlight successes, best practices, and encourage other entities to consider implementing P2 approaches.

Consider applying for this non-monetary award to recognize organizations from Region 7 (Iowa, Kansas, Missouri, Nebraska, and nine tribal nations).

Definition of Pollution Prevention (P2)

P2 includes practices that reduce environmental releases of hazardous substances, pollutants, or contaminants prior to entering a waste stream for recycling, treatment, or disposal. In other words, P2 is source reduction, the prevention of generating waste and environmental releases at the source. P2 is not treatment, minimization, or diversion of wastes. P2 conserves natural resources, including water and energy.

Eligibility and Application Information

A company or companies – including both nonprofit and for-profit, and individuals in their capacities as representatives of companies – located in Region 7 are eligible to apply for the P2 Recognition Awards. Companies located within federally recognized tribes within Region 7 are also eligible.

Governmental organizations like states, tribes, or local governments; unaffiliated individuals; EPA P2 grant and cooperative agreement recipients; and EPA P2 contractors are not eligible for this award program. However, a company or companies assisted by P2 grant recipients may apply.

EPA grantees, contractors, and cooperative agreement recipients are not eligible to apply; however, they can encourage a business to apply.

P2 Recognition Awards are awarded to a company or companies that have implemented pollution prevention projects and/or process improvements at their facilities. P2 technologies on the market or P2 consultant services are not eligible. EPA does not endorse the products, services, or enterprises of non-federal entities.

If you are a company in another EPA Region, please contact your Regional P2 Coordinator to determine if your Region participates in the EPA P2 Awards Program.

EPA will conduct a compliance screening for all award applicants.

APPLICATION SUBMISSION WINDOW:

  • April 3, 2023, through May 31, 2023 (closed)

PROJECTS:

P2 is a multimedia environmental management technique, emphasizing the elimination or reduction of wastes at the source of generation. P2 also emphasizes the reduction of direct environmental impacts and the use of resources and materials. Projects eligible for the awards must meet the goals of the P2 program listed below.

The goals of P2 are:

  • Eliminate or reduce waste generation.
  • Conserve natural resources and materials, including water and energy.
  • Prevent spills and accidental releases.
  • Prevent product losses.
  • Reduce hazardous materials use.
  • Promote the purchasing and use of less hazardous or more efficient equipment.

Examples of P2 activities or projects are:

  • Reducing greenhouse gas and waste generation.
  • Reducing chemical use.
  • Substituting hazardous chemicals with safer alternatives.
  • Water or energy conservation.
