Processing Fish Biopsy Plug Samples
Here are the steps for preparing fish biopsy plug samples before analysis.
- Samples for metals analysis should be stored in plastic, borosilicate glass, quartz, or PTFE containers. Fish plugs have a larger surface area to volume ratio than other types of samples; therefore, the containers should be appropriately sized to avoid freezer burn.
- Weigh vials and label before being transferred to a freezer for storage at less than or equal to -20ºC.
- Maximum holding time recommended is 1 year. More research is needed to establish a scientifically based holding time, but one year would avoid freezer burn and allow ample time for the laboratory to process samples.
It is essential that the mass of the aliquot is sufficient to perform the desired analysis. For example, a minimum plug mass of 0.5 g to 0.7 g is required for mercury analysis.
