State-certified laboratories regularly test drinking water samples for compliance with National Primary Drinking Water Regulations and public water systems (PWSs) provide these monitoring results to their served customers to comply with Consumer Confidence Report requirements.

Individuals interested in independently having their drinking water tested are encouraged to contact a state-certified drinking water laboratory. Unfortunately, EPA is unable to test residential or commercial drinking water upon request.

EPA gives states primary responsibility for applying Safe Drinking Water Act (SDWA) standards that public water systems must follow. Public water systems use state-certified laboratories to regularly test drinking water samples using methods evaluated and approved by EPA.
