2018 Federal Green Challenge Award Winners in the Northeast Region

Recognition was an important part of the Federal Green Challenge (FGC). Awards were given in the categories of Electronics, Energy, Waste and Water in the Northeast region.

In Region 2, which serves New Jersey, New York, Puerto Rico, the U.S. Virgin Islands and eight Tribal Nations, the 2018 regional award winners were the Veterans Administration, Caribbean Healthcare System; the Department of Energy, Princeton Plasma Physics Laboratory; the Veterans Administration, Syracuse Medical Center; the Fort Buchanan Army Reserve; and 10 General Service Administration federal buildings located in New York. The award winners shared details about their diversion activities, and about their awards with EPA. Below are the stories they told behind their accomplishments.

Electronics

Department of Energy, Princeton Plasma Physics Lab, Princeton, N.J.

The Princeton Plasma Physics Lab underwent a Department of Energy campus-wide clean out initiative in 2017. The biggest increase was to scrap metal and electronics recycling, which jumped by 54.1 percent over fiscal year 2016, with total electronics recycled to a third party at 21 tons.

Energy

General Services Administration, Alexander Hamilton U.S. Custom House, New York, N.Y.

The Alexander Hamilton U.S. Custom House reduced its total energy consumption by 9 percent.

General Services Administration, Federal Office Building on 201 Varick Street, New York, N.Y.

The Federal Office Building on 201 Varick Street reduced its energy consumption by 1,189,855,983 kWh, resulting in an almost 9 percent energy decrease.

General Services Administration, Jacob K. Javits Federal Building at 26 Federal Plaza, New York, N.Y.

The Jacob K. Javits Federal Building at 26 Federal Plaza reduced its natural gas consumption by 35,619,643 cubic feet, resulting in an 86 percent reduction in natural gas use.

General Services Administration, Theodore Roosevelt U.S. Courthouse, Brooklyn, N.Y.

The Theodore Roosevelt U.S. Courthouse had an energy reduction of 1,607,290,076 kWh, resulting in a nearly 12 percent reduction in energy consumption. The building also had a reduction in natural gas consumption by almost 11 percent.

Veterans Administration, Syracuse VA Medical Center, Syracuse, N.Y.

The Syracuse Medical VA Center had a total energy reduction of 10,260,290 kWh, resulting in a 26 percent reduction in electricity consumed.

Waste

Army Reserve, Fort Buchanan, Guaynabo, Puerto Rico

The Fort Buchanan Army Reserve diverted and recycled a total of 2,804 tons of waste from landfills, resulting in a diversion rate of 60 percent.

Department of Energy, Princeton Plasma Physics Lab, Princeton, N.J.

The Princeton Plasma Physics Lab had an 83.9 percent material diversion rate from landfills, including recycling and composting, for a total of 1,041 tons diverted.

General Services Administration, Cellar Courthouse, Brooklyn, N.Y.

The Cellar Courthouse diverted and recycled 110 tons of waste, resulting in a 75 percent waste diversion rate from landfills.

General Services Administration, Conrad B. Duberstein U.S. Bankruptcy Courthouse, New York, N.Y.

The Duberstein Courthouse diverted 55 tons of waste from landfills, resulting in a 65 percent diversion rate.

General Services Administration, Federal Office Building on 201 Varick Street, New York, N.Y.

The Federal Building on 201 Varick Street diverted and recycled a total of 110 tons of waste, resulting in a 75 percent waste diversion rate from landfills.

Veterans Administration, Caribbean Health Care System, San Juan, Puerto Rico

The Veterans Affairs Caribbean Healthcare System increased its municipal solid waste recycling and composting by 88 percent for a total of 1,970 tons diverted from landfills.

Water

General Services Administration, Alexander Hamilton U.S. Custom House, New York, N.Y.

The Alexander Hamilton U.S. Custom House reduced its water use by 2,646,674 gallons, resulting in a 30.52 percent reduction in water consumption.

General Services Administration, Alfonse M. D’Amato Court House, Central Islip, N.Y.

The Alfonse M. D’Amato Court House reduced its water use by 741,228 gallons, resulting in an 8.8 percent reduction in water consumption.

General Services Administration, Cellar Courthouse, Brooklyn, N.Y.

The Cellar Courthouse reduced its water use by 718,688 gallons, resulting in an almost 22 percent reduction in water consumption.

General Services Administration, Conrad B. Duberstein U.S. Bankruptcy Courthouse, Brooklyn, N.Y.

The Conrad B. Duberstein U.S. Bankruptcy Courthouse reduced its water use by 347,671 gallons, resulting in a 7 percent reduction in water consumption.

General Services Administration, Federal Office Building on 201 Varick Street, Brooklyn, N.Y.

The Federal Office Building on 201 Varick Street reduced its water use by 2,251,480 gallons, resulting in a 23 percent diversion rate.

General Services Administration, James M. Hanley Federal Building, Syracuse, N.Y.

The James M. Hanley Federal Building reduced its water use by 1,238,717 gallons, resulting in a 36 percent reduction in water consumption.

General Services Administration, James T. Foley U.S. Courthouse, Albany, N.Y.

The James T. Foley U.S. Courthouse reduced its water use by 123,794, resulting in an 18 percent reduction in water consumption.

General Services Administration, Leo W. O’Brien Federal Building, Albany, N.Y.

The Leo W. O’Brien Federal Building reduced its water use by 493,466 gallons, resulting in a 29 percent reduction in water consumption.

General Services Administration, Theodore Roosevelt U.S. Courthouse, Brooklyn, N.Y.

The Theodore Roosevelt U.S. Courthouse reduced its water use by 1,527,448 gallons, resulting in an almost 22 percent reduction of water consumption.
