EPA Completes Cleanup at 296 Properties this Year at the Jacobsville Superfund Site in Evansville, Indiana
Work will shut down for winter months and resume in the spring
CHICAGO (December 19, 2024) – Today, U.S. Environmental Protection Agency announced it had completed contaminated soil cleanup at 296 residential properties during 2024 at the Jacobsville Neighborhood Soil Contamination Superfund site in Evansville, Indiana. This brings the total number of properties cleaned to 4,483. EPA finished the last property on Dec. 12 and will resume cleanups in spring 2025.
During the 2024 construction season, EPA cleaned up soil contaminated with lead and arsenic at properties within the Superfund boundary. EPA also tested the soil at 338 additional properties, bringing the total to 7,569. In January 2024, EPA lowered the regional screening level for lead in residential soil, which could make additional homes eligible for clean up. When sampling resumes next spring, EPA will provide more information to the community.
U.S. Army Corps of Engineers will continue managing day-to-day cleanup activities when work resumes in the spring.
