Addressing Noncompliance
EPA’s compliance assurance program works with federal, state and Tribal partners to monitor and ensure compliance with environmental laws to promote a level playing field for companies that comply with the law and to protect human health and the environment. EPA also directly implements certain programs.
Inspections are a critical part of EPA’s compliance monitoring programs. EPA develops and supports the Agency's, state, and Tribal inspectors by issuing credentials, providing guidance, and more.
EPA’s compliance assurance program monitors compliance across over 40 programs authorized by the statutes within EPA’s jurisdiction.
To address noncompliance efficiently, EPA offers incentives to encourage regulated entities, including new owners, to voluntarily discover, promptly disclose, and expeditiously correct environmental problems through the EPA Audit Policy, titled “Incentives for Self- Policing: Discovery, Disclosure, Correction and Prevention of Violations.”
